A model of an Aleutian kayak from the Kodiak Archipelago

This model of the Aleutian kayak was brought to St.Petersburg by the famous Russian navigator Yuri Fedorovich Lisyansky. During his circumnavigation on the sloop Neva, he spent  more than  a year in Russian trading posts in North America, where he managed to fight with the local Tlingit Indians. Unlike the warlike Tlingits, the Aleuts did not fight against the Russians and were engaged in barter trade. One of the popular goods were small souvenirs – miniature kayaks with figurines. A passenger is visible between two Aleut oarsmen – a Russian sailor. The structure of the kayak is covered with sea lion bladder// The beginning of the 19-th century
