For the first time the military-political governing body appeared in the red army after the revolution. Its name was changed several times, and in 1991 the structure was named the Main military-political Department of The armed forces of the USSR.
The main task of the unit since the founding was to work with the moral and psychological state of the personnel. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the political component left the name of the Central Board — in 1992, the Main Directorate for work with personnel (GURLS) was created, which also changed its name several times.
30 July 2018 President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin by his decree created the Russian defense Ministry Main military-political management of the Armed forces of the Russian Federation.
